If only you make a plan…

Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!

So begins the classic Dr. Seuss book that have been read for children and given to high school and college graduates year in and year out.

It’s August, a month full of ‘back to school’ planning, gearing up, getting ready and gathering supplies.  Putting the kids in order.

But are you in order?  Do you have a plan for where you are going?  Where you want to go?

Where you want to go next week? Next month? Next year?

Where do you want to be in 10 years? You need a plan!  You need vision!  And most importantly, you need the confidence that IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, YOU CAN DO IT! This is the message in the book.

This isn’t just pie in the sky stuff, it warns of the inevitable ups and downs in life and guess what?  You’ll get them in your art and your business as well.

Oh, the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. There are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You’ll be famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don’t.
Because sometimes they won’t.

I’m afraid that some times
you’ll play lonely games too.
Games you can’t win
’cause you’ll play against you.

All alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you’ll be quite a lot.

And when you’re alone, there’s a very good chance
you’ll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won’t want to go on.

Does this sound familiar? Some days you’re spirits are up and the art is flowing.  Other days, like me, you might feel so utterly alone in your studio you wonder whatever possessed you to think you could do this! Beware staying in that mood too long… grab the book and read on!

So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life’s
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.
And will you succeed?
Yes! You will indeed.
(98 and 3/4 percent guarantied.)
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Modecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!

Today I challenge you to take a minute, an hour or an afternoon — sit down and dream.

What do you want from your business?  Who are your ideal clients? What products would give you goosebumps to have your art on?

Now go Google or shop and make a list of 5 companies to target, research and talk to.

If you don’t know where you want to go, how are you going to get there?

P.S. I think this book should be on every artist’s bookshelf, here’s a link to get it at Amazon.
