I’m often asked how to spot trends. Trends are all around us – the key is to learn to spot them when they are just starting and not when they are already big and about to jump the proverbial shark. There is no tried and true way to be sure that something is a trend – but you can develop habits of noticing things. If you start to see things multiple times – for example, all of the sudden you notice butterflies on clothing then butterflies on home decor – you can take an educated guess that butterfiles are trending.
Here’s a silly video about trend spotting that I was inspired to create today because a few of my friends called me from an event in New Jersey and I felt like the grounded kid missing the slumber party. We were joking on Facebook and Twitter about NJ – and I asked if I needed to wear a Bump-It to join the fun. (Not that I could since I was sitting in my studio in Oregon!) Then inspiration hit – my friend Angela and I headed to the store to pick up a Bump-It and the rest is crazy accent history. (Please forgive my slipping into a southern accent at the very end… oops!)
I hope this amuses and inspires you – I’m putting myself out there with this one! 🙂 @FawnKey, @KimBeasley, @KellyRudolph, @KellieFrazier, @AlexMandossian and the rest of my teleseminar secrets friends in New Jersey – this one’s for you!

Here’s to your creative success!

Hilarious! I love it!
Wow Tara – That is awesome! Great message and a perfect New Joisey accent! I know because I lived in Manhattan for 3 years and commuted out to NJ every day. I still sometimes ask for a cup of coifee in Southern CA and they look at me like I am from another planet!
Another interesting fact about New Jersey. I am not completely sure of this but based on my experience with NJ drivers I think that they send you a drivers license in the mail when you turn 17 🙂 Honestly – I felt safer on the autobahns in Germany doing 200 Kph than I ever did on I95 in NJ. But that is another story!
Thanks for going out on the edge with this one. You are an inspiration to us 🙂
Daniel.
You are too funny Tara! Hilarious!! 🙂 Wish you were in NJ this week – would love to see you and say Hi!
That was most excellent Tara!!! You are the New Joisey queen. Great message that we all need to be reminded of. We tend to overlook so many of these opportunities trends and take them for granted simply because of the sheer number that’s thrown at us on a daily basis. We need to train ourselves to be aware these things.
Thanks for the reminder and for being so entertaining. Luv ya : )
I loved it, fun and good info at the same time. (What’s a bumpit?)
Sharon – a Bumpit is a piece of plastic you stick under your ratted hair to get that 60’s big hair look… here’s a link to learn all about them! 🙂 http://www.bighappiehair.com/
Great, appreciated vid, Tara! You are more Jersey than we’ve seen all week since we are in the hotel.
Too funny! I agree with Kelly; we didn’t get to see near as heavy a Jersey accent, nor one single bump-it, at our hotel on the Jersey shores. Thanks for reminding me what I was missing!
You have such a great approach to marketing Tara. Thanks for the laugh!
Cute! As I understand the parody, I am still a bit defensive of my home state and am horrified that the rest of the country think that people from NJ are like that. The Jersey Shore cast are not even from NJ, they are from NY! Not everyone here speaks like that, most of NJ is rural farmland. I guess all areas have their stereotypes.
ok, tawk amongst yaselves 😉 I’m gettin some cawfee now
Debbie –
I totally get it! I grew up going to the Southern Jersey Shore (Ocean City, Stone Harbor, Avalon) not AT ALL like the show! All in good fun but yes, I can see why you would be defensive. 🙂
You did “bump it” up. Good fun.
