Surf’s up! I’m so excited to have Drew Brophy’s art licensing story for a number of reasons – first and foremost so I can stop hounding him and his wife about it on Twitter. (@DrewBrophy @MariaBrophy) I was beginning to feel like a pest but knew we would want his story and as you will soon see – I was right!
From Surfer dude to licensed artists – Drew’s story is different than many because he has found a way to build a successful business with more of a niche style. Not one to paint the traditional wine or Santa designs, Drew’s art stems from the surfer style. What began with him painting surf boards, broadened into other areas that make perfect sense for the market – beach towels, hats, boogie boards, even tattoos.
Without further ado – here is Drew Brophy’s art licensing story.

Hi Tara, I love to watch these video stories you’re posting. Thanks for posting them. You and Maria Brophy a re a wealth of information and Drew is a great inspiration.
I can’t decide whether I want to got to the beach or stay in my studio creating art after watching that : )
Thanks for the opportunity to put this together for your readers, Tara! It’s great how all of the Art Licensing Stories you’ve collected are very different from each other. Each story gives many great ideas to artists wanting to learn about licensing.
(Thanks for the kudos, Carlos. You know we love your Baldo cartoon!)
BTW, if anyone’s wondering what Drew’s wearing on his ears in this video, it’s his headphones. He wears them all day while working – that way no one can disturb him (esp. me!)
Very cool. Love seeing all the stuff.
More proof we should follow our own voice and style! Love It!
Hi, I was fortunate enough to be set up at the Licensing Show a few years ago right across from Drew Brophy. My husband and I got to meet Drew, Maria & Al McWhite (another surf artist). Not only were these folks really helpful and open with info and advice, they had a very cool booth set up with live painting by 2 artists (Drew & Al). Maria was also really great by giving me alot of great advice about licensing. I think Drew is a great example of someone who’s art who is sometimes imitiated, but never duplicated, because of his high technical ability and creativity. Plus he’s got his stuff on Chuck Taylors, how cool is that?
